About Us
As successful lifelong language learners ourselves, and instructors with decades of teaching in the Torah school systems, we are passionate about connecting students to their precious heritage -- by developing their Hebrew language skills and their ability to both understand and communicate with confidence.
Our Team
Dvora Kaplan, M.A., Director
Israeli born, Mrs. Dvora Kaplan has 20 years of Hebrew and Limudei Kodesh teaching experience in Uruguay, Texas, and Michigan. Mrs. Kaplan pursued her Master's Degree in Teaching Hebrew as a Second Language from Middlebury College in Vermont; she is also a Chabad Shlicha to the Israeli community in Michigan, and a consultant for the development of Hebrew unit curricula at Beit Yaakov, Mexico.
Avigail Bakaleynik, Curriculum & Training Materials Development
With a B.A. magna cum laude in (Russian) Language & Linguistics and a concentration in Second Language Acquisition from Bryn Mawr College, Mrs. Bakaleynik has studied Russian, Hebrew, French, Spanish, and Yiddish, in addition to her native English. Over the past 30 years, she has taught Limudei Kodesh, Language, and Mathematics, from Pre-1A to adult, in traditional classrooms, Hebrew Schools, and alternative learning environments, with a special emphasis on gifted and supplementary education. Prior to joining Hebrew Our Way, she piloted a proficiency-style Hebrew curriculum for middle school students in Chicago.

Vardit Ringwald, Ph.D., Director
The School of Hebrew at Middlebury College
Professor Ringvald's numerous accomplishments in the field of Hebrew language pedagogy include (to name only a few) founding the Hebrew Language Summer Institute at Brandeis University (1996), creating the Master of Arts in Teaching Hebrew (1998), working on the team to develop Hebrew Proficiency guidelines and curriculum frameworks for ACTFL and the U.S. Dept of Education, supervising development of materials for reading and listening strategies, founding the School for Hebrew at Middlebury (2008), serving as the chair of the SAT II for Hebrew, and more. She is one of the developers of the Oral Proficiency Interview for Hebrew and an OPI trainer. Professor Ringvald is also the primary author of Brandeis Modern Hebrew, the first to be based on the proficiency method.

Doran Katz, EdD, Instructor
The School of Hebrew at Middlebury College
Dr. Katz designed and set the standard for the first hybrid learning model (distance and in person) at Middlebury Language Schools. She conducts research, advises students, and works to create and sustain school partnerships. Middlebury School of Hebrew is the catalyst behind the Hebrew language revolution which is rapidly setting a new bar globally for quality, expectations, and language proficiency levels.
Dafna Saslavsky, M.A., Director,
Dept. Jewish Ed. & Hebrew, Universidad Hebraica Mexico
Professor Saslavsky has a Masters in Teaching Hebrew from Middlebury College & a Masters in Education (with a specialization in Human Resources) from the Universidad Anáhuac. She has also completed postgraduate studies in Jewish Education at the Melton Center of Jewish Education of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. She has significant educational experience as Director of Early Childhood, Elementary School Director, and a General Coordinator of Jewish Studies in the Mexican Jewish day school system.
Tomer Grossman, Ph.D.
Education Ministry, Israel
Tomer Grossman, Ph.D. in Education and Instructional Technology (Bar Ilan University) and M.A. in Education and Supervision (Yeshiva University), and a fellow in the Mandel School for Educational Leadership, also studied computer science and mathematics at Bar Ilan for his B.A. He also learned in Yeshivat HaGolan in Chispin. Dr. Grossman currently supervises religious educational activities in the Jerusalem area for the Education Ministry, and is responsible for approximately 150 schools and 500 preschool institutions.

Rina Geltana
Involved in projects of Universidad Hebraica Mexico and in the Mexican Hebrew day school system and community, Rina has been teaching Hebrew in בית הילדים for the past 11 years. She has a BA in Education. Rina's passion is for Hebrew, Israel, Jewish continuity, Judaism, and of course, children.
Ilana Weinberg
אילנה וינברג מלמדת מעל 30 שנה ומתמחה בהוראת עברית כשפה שניה, לימודי יהדות וגיל הרך. היא יועצת בלימודי עברית בבתי ספר ובמחנות קיץ יהודיים. אילנה נולדה בארה"ב ועלתה לארץ עם משפחתה כילדה. היא סיימה תואר ראשון בלימודי הסטוריה של עם ישראל ואמנות יהודית באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים ורכשה משם גם תעודת הוראה. היא עשתה תואר שני בהוראת גיל הרך מסיטי קולג' בנו יורק ועוד תואר שני ממידלברי קולג' בהוראת עברית כשפה שניה. אילנה גרב בנו יורק ועובדת בבית ספר צ'רטר שמלמד עברית בהרלם.
Irit Stein
Irit has over 25 years of experience as a first / second grade teacher, teacher coach, and early childhood literacy advisor. Irit has been a senior coach at "Hebrew at the Center", working with multiple schools across the USA. In 2016 Irit opened her own consulting company, IS Language Consulting, and is currently working with and coaching schools across the country on teaching Hebrew as second language in the Proficiency methodology and literacy for early childhood. Irit teaches graduate students in the Hebrew MA program at Middlebury College, while pursuing her doctorate. She earned her B.Ed. from “Oranim” Institute & Haifa University in Israel, and a Masters in Hebrew Teaching from Middlebury.

Ronit Avitan Alexander
Ronit Avitan Alexander obtained her master's degree in Teaching Hebrew as a Second Language, writing her master’s thesis on language anxiety and ways to increase participation in the language classroom. She has been part of the Middlebury MA program as a TA and a Teaching Fellow for the last two years, in addition to teaching at Northwestern University in Chicago. Her further research focuses on providing meaningful feedback to language learners. Ronit earned her BA in Psychology and Ancient Near East Studies from Ben Gurion University in Beer-Sheva, Israel. She is passionate about languages and has studied four foreign languages throughout her life. Ronit has experience teaching Hebrew at all levels and ages and strives to create engaging lessons focusing on communication and authentic materials.
Gila Azrad
A Hebrew teacher and instructor of Hebrew teachers and a doctoral student of Modern Languages at Middlebury College, Gila has extensive experience in Judaic Studies, Hebrew and Teacher Training. She studied Special Education and Hebrew Literature at the Kibbutzim College (Tel Aviv), received her MA in Education and an MA in teaching Hebrew as a Second Language from the University of Middlebury. Her research work focused on the use of authentic materials. At present Gila is working as a mentor for Hebrew teachers and as a Practicum instructor at the Hebrew School Master Program at Middlebury College, Vermont.

Sorke (Sarah) Chung
Sarah Chung has an MS in Psychology (Gestalt Psychotherapy), and an MA in Teaching Hebrew as a Second Language, and more than three decades of Elementary and Early Childhood Hebrew teaching experience. Broadening her scope, she is currently working on her third master's degree -- in Supervision and Administration. She has a special interest in Scriptural narratives.

Yael Gal
יעל גל בן יצחק עוסקת בהוראת עברית כשפה זרה מזה 20 שנה. יעל היא מרצה בכירה לעברית באוניברסיטת וויסקונסין – מילווקי (UWM) ומורה לעברית בבית הספר התיכון הציבורי – ניקוליי (Nicolet).
יעל היא בעלת תואר ראשון בחינוך ובשפה וספרות אנגלית מאוניברסיטת חיפה ובעלת תואר שני בהוראת עברית כשפה שנייה ממידלברי קולג'. כיום היא דוקטורנטית בתוכנית ללימודי תואר שלישי בשפות מודרניות במידלברי קולג'. כמו כן, היא בעלת תעודת הוראה מאוניברסיטת חיפה ומאוניברסיטת וויסקונסין-מילווקי ובעלת תעודה למורים בכירים מהיברו קולג' במסצ'וסטס.
יעל משלבת בהוראת השפה העברית מגוון כלים טכנולוגיים שתומכים בלמידה ומעודדים מעורבות ויצירתיות של הלומדים. ניסיונה הרב של יעל והמומחיות שפיתחה בהוראת שפה זכו להכרה, וזו באה לביטוי בפרסים שבהם זכתה: פרס הצטיינות ארצי בהוראת עברית ויהדות מטעם קרן "גרינספון – סטיינהרדט" (2008), פרס הצטיינות על שילוב טכנולוגיה בהוראה מטעם אוניברסיטת וויסקונסין מילווקי (2017) ופרס "אשת השנה בחינוך היהודי" מטעם הפדרציה היהודית במילווקי (2019).
החל משנת 2017 יעל חברה בוועדת מחברי בחינת הנושא בעברית מודרנית בארצות הברית ה SAT מטעם ה College Board והחל מקיץ 2020 היא מכהנת כיושבת ראש הוועדה.
Liora Gazit
Liora Gazit has a bachelor’s in Education / Special Education and a master’s in Public Administration and Public Policy from Ben-Gurion University in the Negev (with a focus on the educational system), as well as an MA from Middlebury in Teaching Hebrew as a Second Language. Over 25 years, she has helped students confront learning and emotional challenges from kindergarten through high school, mainstreaming special education students, as well as working directly in specialized first and second grade language classrooms. Liora believes that every student has the capacity to learn a second language, while understanding that the path each student takes will be different. The teacher’s task is to provide the support and direction that will help him or her on the journey.
Ketty Granite
Ketty is the creator of the Granite Ivrit Hebrew as a Second Language curriculum for schools. She is an educator, speaker, mentor and trainer to teachers and administrators, with vast experience in both the Israeli and international educational systems. Ketty has extensive knowledge and experience in the fields of Organizational Culture, Second Language Acquisition and Learning, Assessment and Measurement Tools, and Use of Technology in the 21st Century. Ketty has a Master’s degree in Educational Management from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and a second Master’s degree in Teaching Hebrew as a Second Language from Middlebury College. Currently she is a student and candidate in the Doctor of Modern Languages (DML) degree program at Middlebury College.
Racheli Morris
Racheli Morris is Hebrew lecturer at CSULB teaching Hebrew as a second language and Bible studies. During her career Rachel has been a coordinator of Hebrew and Bible studies in formal and informal schools, and has composed curricula for all ages and levels from kindergarten to high school. Racheli has MA from Middlebury in Teaching Hebrew as a Second Language. She is currently a doctoral candidate. Racheli believes in a student-centered approach, and that with the right program, the sky is the limit.
Mira Angrist
Mira Angrist has been a lecturer of Hebrew at Boston University since 2008 and head of the Hebrew program since 2012. She is also the department coordinator for full and part-time faculty and affiliated faculty at the Eli Wiesel Center for Jewish Studies. Her professional expertise includes: blended classroom techniques, integration of technology with language pedagogy, spiral curriculum development, and teacher mentoring. She is an active member of the National Association of Professors of Hebrew (NAPH) and serves on its pedagogical committee. She has been a Lead Advisor at Hebrew at the Center, a national non-profit organization advising schools on Hebrew curricula to meet proficiency standards. She provides face-to-face and online webinars, and mentors Hebrew teachers. Ms. Angrist is a frequent presenter at national and international conferences and has published articles on Hebrew education. Her recent article titled “Social Reading in L2” was published in the Hebrew Higher Education Journal.
Ronit Lerman
רונית לרמן, בעלת תואר שני בהוראת עברית כשפה שנייה, "מידלברי קולג"- בית ספר לשפות, ורמונט במסגרת ההתמחות שלי התנסתי בהוראת העברית בכל הרמות ולכל הגילאים כיום אני מלמדת באוניברסיטת ברווארד קולג׳ בפלורידה, ברמת מתחילים. לימדתי בבתי ספר יהודיים דתיים בחטיבת ביניים ובתיכון בישראל התמחתי והתמקצעתי בהוראת השפה בכל הכישורים) לכיתות הנמוכות.
Ziva Platner
לזיוה ניסיון עשיר בתחומים שונים:

בעלת תעודת הוראה מאוניברסיטת תל- אביב. בעלת תעודת מטפלת באמנות- המדרשה לאמנות ״רמת השרון, בבית ברל״, ובעלת תואר שני בהוראת השפה העברית כשפה שנייה 2017, מטעם אוניברסיטת מידלברי ורמונט, בארה״ב. זיוה שואפת לקדם את מקצוע הוראת העברית כשפה שניה ואת הישגי הלומדים בתהליך רכישת השפה העברית ותרבותה. היא מונעת מתוך התפיסה החדשנית כי שפה נרכשת תוך שימוש בחומרים אותנטיים אשר נוצרים בתרבות שפת היעד: סרטים,עיתונים,עלונים, אמנות: חזותית,שימושית, ועוד.

Sarah Fuchs
Sarah Fuchs, M.A., Teaching Hebrew as a Second Language, is the director of Tachles: A Fresh Approach to Hebrew and Israeli Culture at the World Zionist Organization. She has taught Hebrew at the Michigan Jewish Institute, at Tulane University, and the director of Bagrut Hebrew High in New Orleans, LA.
Ronit Ron-Yerushalmi
Ronit is the Director of Language and Global Studies at Kavod Elementary Charter School in San Diego, CA. She is also a faculty associate at the Critical Languages Institute at Arizona State University, and she has taught Hebrew and Language Acquisition in several states, as well as Canada, and in the Technion, Haifa, Israel. With a master's in education from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, she now is a doctoral student at Middlebury's Modern Language Program. She is a fully certified Hebrew OPI tester, and among many honors and service positions, is currently the president of the Foreign Language Council of San Diego.

הרקע והמטרה בהקמת העמותה
מנהיגים ומחנכים בקהילות יהודיות ברחבי העולם, מכירים בחשיבות הקניית ידע מעשי ותפקודי בשפה העברית ובלשון הקודש.
סקר שנערך לאחרונה במוסדות חינוך תורניים, הוכיח כי השפה העברית ולשון הקודש הם ערך חזק במוסדות חינוכיים אלה וקבע כי יש צורך ברור לפתח, להתמקצע ולתמוך בהוראת השפה, תוך התחשבות בערכי הליבה הייחודיים של מוסדות אלה.
אנשי חינוך ומנהלי מוסדות בבתי ספר תורניים בתפוצות מבינים שידע ויכולת תפקודית בשפה העברית ובלשון קודש, הם כלים רבי עוצמה אשר משפיעים מאוד על אופן הלמידה והתפקוד של התלמידים בכל מקצועות התורה וההלכה, בהבנת מילות התפילה וכהכנה לקראת לימודים ומגורים בישראל. הם מסכימים שכדי לשפר ולהרחיב את יכולתם של התלמידים לתפקד בשפה העברית ולהצליח בלימודי הקודש שלהם, יש להשקיע בקידום המורים והכשרתם בכל מה שקשור בהבנת תהליכים של רכישת שפה.
העמותה ״עברית בדרכנו״ הוקמה ללא מטרות רווח, לתת מענה לצרכים אלה, להעצים את הוראת השפה העברית ולשון הקודש בבתי הספר התורניים והקהילות האורתודוקסיות, ולהעניק לתלמידים את ההזדמנות לרכוש יכולות תפקודיות גבוהות בשפה ולחוות תחושת שייכות והצלחה.
"עברית בדרכנו" מציעה מרכז הכשרה ותמיכה מקצועי למורות המלמדות עברית ולשון הקודש על פי גישת הפרופישנסי.
המורות המתמקצעות מקבלות עזרה ותמיכה בכל מה שקשור ביישום העקרונות של הגישה בכל שלב בתכנון ההוראה וההוראה בפועל;
* במציאת חומרים אותנטיים,
* בפיתוח ומיפוי החומרים והנגשתם לתלמידים,
* בתכנון שלבי השיעור ומבנה היחידה,
* בהצבה וניסוח המטרות התפקודיות והלשוניות בהוראה,
* בהכנת מבדקים והערכות ללומדים בדרכים שונות ומגוונות,
* בשיקוף התהליך והסקת המסקנות לשיפור וייעול התכנית והתאמתה ללומדים.
